In David Copperfield, Charles Dickens’s character Wilkins Micawber pronounced a now-famous law:
Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen pounds nineteen and six, result happiness.

Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pounds ought and six, result misery.
